What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD, is one type of anxiety disorder. It is a type of anxiety disorder that affects women more than men; although as a rule it is relatively common. GAD usually begins to manifest itself in childhood, as well as the adolescent period, but it has been known to appear in full grown adults as well. Several studies show that GAD may actually be hereditary – meaning it is passed on in within a family. High levels of physical and psychological stress are also thought to contribute to the advent, as well as the worsening, of a generalized anxiety disorder.

It is not easy to spot a generalized anxiety disorder since symptoms make take some time to appear. However, if you or anyone you know is experiencing some of the symptoms described below, please consult a certified physician, and/or a psychiatrist. If you have recently fallen into depression or used illegal substances, be sure to inform your doctor as well. This will allow your physician to make a more accurate diagnosis of what is really bothering you.

The symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder include:

1. Severe anxiety and tension, often for periods of half a year or more. The sufferer is subject to above-average levels of psychological stress for an inordinate period of time, and may be unable to carry on his day to day affairs. The stress “triggers” may include just about anything, even things and events that people do not usually worry too much about.

2. Inability to relax. The sufferer may worry excessively about his physical or material safety. He may expect the worst out of every situation, and conjure up frightening scenarios in his mind, even when no danger is apparent.

3. Insomnia. The sufferer may be unable to procure a proper amount of sleep, further contributing to mental imbalance. He may have fears of something terrible happening once he is resting in bed.

4. Physical manifestations. People with GAD may also have symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, muscle tension, and irritability. If these symptoms appear with those mentioned above, you may suffer from the disorder. Note that these symptoms are indicative of abnormally high levels of mental stress.

How can GAD be treated?

Generalized anxiety disorder is currently being treated by the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Medications are also often prescribed to help alleviate the symptoms of the disorder, such as various anti-depressants.
